The Impact of Breastfeeding on Infants and Mothers

Breastfeeding is one of the most efficient and practical ways a mother can ensure good health and survival for her child. Most doctors recommend that mothers breastfeed their children, and 44% of infants are exclusively only fed breastmilk.

However, breastfeeding is a personal choice for many mothers. Let’s look at the impact breastfeeding has on mothers and infants.

Infants

Breastmilk provides babies with abundant nutrients, with nutritional elements that can be easily absorbed by their bodies. It has antibodies coming directly from the mother as a mother’s immune system is stronger and more mature.

There is a lower risk of any virus or bacteria entering the baby’s system, leading to asthma or any type of allergies. Breastfeeding also results in fewer chances of ear infection, diarrhea, and other respiratory illnesses.

Breastfeeding has also been associated with high IQ results in children, according to some studies. The impact of physical closeness, skin touch, and eye contact of a baby with their mother also leads to better and secure bonds and prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Mothers

Women who breastfeed, run a lower risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer, amongst other diseases like diabetes, heart disease, cholesterol, etc. Breastfeeding also helps women burn 300 to 500 calories a day and can help women reduce their weight after pregnancy.

Women who breastfeed their babies have high prolactin, which is a hormone that manages positive feelings, increased confidence, and self-esteem. Post-partum depression is also reduced in women who breastfeed their infants.

Delayed menstruation is also an impact of breastfeeding as the release of prolactin keeps the progesterone and estrogen levels low, so ovulation doesn’t occur. Plus, breastfeeding also makes your uterus shrink back to its normal size faster than if you don’t breastfeed (which is at six weeks rather 10 weeks). Women might even feel contractions as they are breastfeeding.
